Michael Angelo's Gourmet Foods: A Company History


Although Michael Angelo’s Gourmet Foods® officially got its start in Southern California in 1982, the recipes for this authentic Italian cuisine were perfected over generations, with care, in Southern Italy. These family recipes were eventually passed down to Michael Angelo Renna, the Founder and CEO of our company.

The business began in a 600 square foot pizzeria in Solano Beach, near San Diego. After closing the pizzeria at night, Michael Angelo, his wife and two friends, pushed tables together to form makeshift production lines. Using family recipes they learned from Sara, Michael’s mother, they prepared four dishes – Lasagna, Stuffed Shells, Eggplant Parmesan and Manicotti. The process took all night.

Initially they took the entrées to small local markets where they caught on immediately. Customers were delighted with the rich taste and wholesome ingredients. Encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response to his family recipes, Michael Angelo introduced his products to a much larger market. Before long, demand for Michael Angelo’s entrées grew and the fledgling company’s products were introduced into the warehouse club stores.

Since that time, Michael Angelo’s®, which is now located in central Texas, has expanded its line to include a menu-full of classic Italian foods that are available in a variety of sizes, just right for any occasion. Michael Angelo’s distinctive black packaging has come to symbolize the union of quality and convenience.
